Championing for the Right to Health

Ustawi Kenya, in collaboration with Oasis health ,Kenya National Congress and community leaders, hosted a highly successful medical camp at Nyamasebe Primary School. This initiative aimed to provide much-needed healthcare services to underserved communities, enhancing access to essential medical care and fostering health awareness. This is in our effort to promote/protect human rights and in recognition of the provision of Article 43(1)(a) of the constitution; Every person has a right to the highest attainable standard of health,which includes the right to health services ,including reproductive health care.

Healthcare Services Delivered

The medical camp offered a variety of free services, including:

  • General Health Checkups: Over 150 residents underwent screenings for common ailments such as hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory conditions.
  • Specialized Services: Eye care and dental consultations were made available, with patients receiving optical care and basic dental treatments.
  • Health Education: Sessions on preventive care, hygiene, and nutrition were conducted to empower the community with knowledge for healthier lifestyles.

Future Plans

Building on the success of this camp, Ustawi Kenya plans to host more medical camps across our counties of operation. We remain committed to addressing healthcare inequalities, with a focus on marginalized groups in urban and peri-urban areas.

The medical camp in Majoge Bassi Ward underscored the power of partnerships in addressing healthcare gaps. Ustawi Kenya extends heartfelt thanks to all participants, stakeholders, and supporters for making this event a resounding success. Together, we continue to champion the well-being of our communities.

Governance in the Grassroots

Ustawi Kenya recently held a successful stakeholder event focused on strengthening partnerships for good governance at the grassroots level. Held at Gachuba Ward, the event brought together community leaders, local government officials, business community, and local residents for an impactful day of discussions, networking, and action planning aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in governance within Nyamira County.

Key Highlights

  1. Commitment to Inclusive Governance
    We emphasized the need for governance structures that include diverse voices, particularly those of marginalized communities, youth, and women. The members present pledged to be active in public participation and ensure that they are actively involved in local governance.

  2. Engagement of Local Leaders and Residents
    The event enabled local leaders and community members to discuss issues directly impacting their livelihooods ,one thing that stoodout is the fact that they felt sidelined in matters development, and resource allocation. These discussions helped to identify gaps in service delivery and areas where community involvement can create positive change.

  3. Capacity Building for Community-Led Accountability
    Ustawi Kenya will facilitate sessions on community-led monitoring and accountability, training residents on how to track public spending, report concerns, and advocate for fair resource distribution. These sessions aimed to empower citizens with skills to contribute actively to governance processes.

  4. A Framework for Future Collaboration
    A key outcome of the event was the establishment of a framework for ongoing collaboration. Stakeholders agreed to create a joint action plan focused on implementing transparent governance practices and monitoring progress regularly. Ustawi Kenya will play a lead role in coordinating these efforts and ensuring sustained engagement.

 

 

Meaningful Engagement - Transformative Action (META)

Ustawi Kenya, a stakeholder in the Lake Region Economic Bloc took part in the inception meeting for The Meaningful Engagement- Transformative Action which is a joint action of FEMNET, the coalition for Sustainable Development and Women Engage for a Common Future International (WECF) with support from the EU Delegation in Kenya.

The action aims to strengthen the capacities and influence of Kenya's Civil Society organizations as independent actors advocating for accountability, good governance, and inclusive development, and provide institutional platforms for their active involvement in the EU's international cooperation between 2024-2027. 

Specifically, the partners sought to strengthen local governance mechanisms, advocate for gender-responsive policies, and promote climate-resilient initiatives that benefit all communities, especially marginalized groups.

  1. Empowering Local Stakeholders: The session emphasized the need for inclusive participation, ensuring that women, youth, and other marginalized groups have a seat at the table when discussing regional economic policies and projects.

  2. Strengthening Civic Engagement: The project aimed to provide the citizens and grassroots organizations within LREB counties with the tools and resources to hold local governments accountable and influence decision-making processes. 

  3. Promoting Environmental Sustainability: climate-smart practices that could be integrated into LREB’s strategic development plans. 

  4. Gender Equality and Policy Advocacy: The meeting highlighted the intersection of gender equality with economic empowerment, advocating for structural changes to promote women’s leadership and economic participation in the bloc's decision-making processes. The meeting laid the groundwork for a robust and inclusive approach to transforming the Lake Region Economic Bloc.
