This past Wednesday, Ustawi Kenya and International Solidarity Foundation, in partnership with Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya)(Kisumu Office), hosted a high-impact Legal Aid Clinic in Gachuba Ward, Nyamira County, drawing over 250 community members for a full day of legal empowerment, healing, and dialogue.
The event brought together a powerful cross-section of stakeholders in the access to justice ecosystem — including advocates, mental health practitioners, village elders, chiefs, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), and the Nyamira County Gender Director — all working in sync to provide holistic support to the community.
Participants engaged in:
Legal awareness sessions on GBV, access to justice, and women’s rights to land, succession, and inheritance
Interactive community dialogues and case-sharing forums
One-on-one legal consultations with advocates from FIDA
Mental health and psychosocial support sessions led by GMA, including private counseling for trauma survivors
This was more than just a clinic — it was a model of community-centered justice delivery. By integrating legal aid with mental health support and grounding the day in local leadership, we created an accessible, inclusive, and safe space for the Gachuba community.
“This is what justice should look like — accessible, coordinated, and rooted in community.” – Nyamira County Gender Director
Ustawi Kenya remains committed to strengthening grassroots access to justice, and we welcome future collaborations with partners, and justice stakeholders to scale this impactful model across the country.
